Don't Get Ripped Off Remodeling Your Bathroom
As a consumer, you are at a big disadvantage when it comes to hiring a contractor, especially when it comes to bathroom remodeling. There are many, and I mean MANY bad contractors in the baltimore area that will not act in your best interests. But how do you determine the bad from the good, the dishonest from the honest? There are a many schemes that these companies use to get your wallet.
Here are a couple to mention
The Undercut:
A large portion of small contractors will estimate an extremely low price, and tell you they can give you everything you want. What usually happens, is that halfway throught the job (or sometimes earlier), the contractor will tell you that your pipes were galvanized steel, or that your 2x4's are warped, and that they cannot complete the job for an extra two thousand dollars! And you have two choices...
- You can pay for the extra fees to complete the job the right way, and risk them doing the same thing again later down the road, and be under the control of the contractor. Also, in most cases, the contractor will do this multiple times in a job to increase his profits as much as possible.
- Kick the dishonest contractor off the job... This one is the better choice usually, but it also comes at a price. You will usually recieve no refund for the amount already paid, and if you hired this contractor at $9,000, paid him $3,000 for the downpayment and $3,000 at the start of the job, then by the time you kick him off, you have lost $6,000 on your bathroom remodeling project! Then you have to hire another contractor for the full price, say $15,000 to complete the job the right way. so you end up paying over $20,000 for a $15,000 bathroom remodeling job.
The Hourly Job:
Some bathroom remodeling contractors (and some other contractors as well) will tell you that a bathroom is a pretty quick project and that it would be cheaper for you to buy the materials and pay him by the hour. He will tell you that it would give you more control over the job, and basicly make you the General Contractor, or in short, the boss. Well, you don't want to be the boss... You hired someone because you wanted the job to be done better than you could do yourself, and you don't need to be a baby sitter. Avoid these contractors like the plague! What will happen is the man, or men, that are remodeling your bathroom will take lots of breaks, and waste time doing little things that dont need to be done. The second someone says the word hourly wage... FIRE THEM!
